Reception to kick off Quinnell retrospective photo exhibit

NEW MILFORD, Conn. — Gregory James Gallery will present a retrospective exhibit of photographs by Bill Quinnell inspired by his recent 80th birthday.
It will open with a reception Sunday, May 18, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The exhibit will highlight themes, styles, and artistic sensibilities the New Milford-based photographer has explored over 40 years, including a new series depicting flowers in vases and earlier photos of boxing and boxers.
The show will continue through May 31.
The exhibit will feature a new series of works inspired by the qualities of morning light as it creeps through Quinnell’s bedroom window each day.
“Whether it’s the sharp yellow of direct sunlight or the soft grays of an overcast sky, it’s always magical and changes with each passing hour and day,” said the photographer, who works with the images from the camera until they look “like a dream I’d like to live in.”
The photographs, like visual tone poems, depict flowers in vases with a sensibility that’s minimalist and ethereal, but also subtly rich and saturated. They are printed on and Epson Ultrachrome Pro Ink on Hahnemuhle Paper Photo Rag 308.
Quinnell, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in philosophy and an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute, taught at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury from 1970 to 2003, finishing his career as the head of the Photography Program in the Art Department.
Among his many interests are boxing and boxers, which Quinnell spent four years documenting through his photography in the early 2000s.
He has had solo shows at Western Connecticut State University, the University of New Haven, Canterbury School, and Sterling Sound in New York City.
Quinnell’s group shows include the Washington Art Association, where he’s a member, the Pratt Institute, 123 Watts Gallery in NYC, Gallery 56 in Memphis, Tenn., McNeese State University in Louisiana, Aura Gallery in Santa Fe, and the University of Texas in Austin.
Gregory James Gallery is located at 149 Park Lane Road (Route 202) in New Milford.
It is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
