New Milford gears up for July 6 fireworks festivities

New downtown location set for fireworks display

The Town of New Milford will play host to its annual Fourth of July Celebration July 6.

The event is coordinated by the Town of New Milford and the Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce.

A rain date of July 13 is set for the fireworks only.

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. near the bandstand on the Village Green, followed by music with Dan Sawyer starting at 6 p.m.

Holiday offerings will include music, a large flag cake made of cupcakes provided by the Woman’s Club of Greater New Milford, and fireworks at dusk, around 9:30 p.m.

New this year is the event will be held on a Sunday, rather than a Saturday as in years past.

Also new is the location for the fireworks. They will be shot off from Young's Field Road.

Mayor Pete Bass explained the change, saying “due to the tree canopy being larger on the Peagler Hill property, where we shot the fireworks previously, we have changed to Youngs Field Road.”

To accommodate the location change and allow for set up, Youngs Field Road will be closed Sunday, July 6, around 1 p.m., from Youngs Field Road to the Patriots Way intersection.

Larger fireworks shells than those used in May at GOAT Days, therefore, no one is permitted to sit or stand on Young’s Field for safety, the mayor said.

The Young’s Field playground area toward Bridge Street will be open for use or to watch the fireworks.

Railroad Street from its intersections with Bridge Street to the parking lot at the Maxx at 94 Railroad St., as well as Bank Street, from 8:30 p.m. until the fireworks end.

Those interested in watching the fireworks downtown can do so on Railroad Street, Patriots Way, Bank Street and the Green, among other areas.

“It’s going to be jamming,” the mayor said of the festive event and the new fireworks location.

Motorists parked in any of the above named areas are advised of the road closure. Motorists will not be able to leave a parking spot until the fireworks end.

Parking will be available in Patriots Way, the town hall municipal parking lots, the senior center lot, Helen Marx Park, The Max, the Railroad Street parking lot, and others.

The mayor noted the fireworks will be able to be seen from the Big Y area.
