Failure to Launch is a term often used to describe young adults who seem unable to move forward into independent adult life. In this talk, psychiatrist Jeremy R. Mack, M.D. looks beyond labels to explore the psychological and relational forces that can stall development. Drawing on decades of clinical experience, he examines how family dynamics, expectations, anxiety, and unspoken emotional loyalties can quietly interfere with independence, motivation, and agency. The talk is designed for parents, educators, and community members seeking a deeper understanding of why capable young people can feel so profoundly stuck—and what helps growth resume.
- 3o min lecture
- 30 min Q/A
Jeremy R. Mack, M.D. is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and in Sherman. He did his residencies in adult and child psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and has held faculty and leadership positions at Mount Sinai and the NYU–Bellevue Hospital, where for many years he was the head of the child psychiatry clinic. He has spent decades working with children, adolescents, and families and has talked and written on ADHD, elective mutism, childhood schizophrenia, the perception of time and space, claustrophilia, Primo Levi and the Holocaust, the mind-brain connection, the conduct of psychotherapy, and family dynamics. He is the author of Phantoms of the Hotel Meurice:A Guide to the Holocaust in Paris, which won a starred review from Kirkus. Dr. Mack will talk about the causes of failure to launch and measures to deal with it.

Stiff competition from nearby Medieval World threatens to drive the annual Renaissance Faire out of business. Attendance is plunging, especially at the traditional Shakespeare production. Who wants to spend three hours on a wooden bench watching a play they don't understand? To survive, the Faire needs a new vibe that appeals to younger audiences. Enter a new director and he plan to stage a program called, "Great Death Scenes from Shakespeare." It seems like a killer idea until the famous Shakespearean actor playing Romeo goes missing, and he is replaced by a brash, young actor of questionable talent. As a major storm approaches, the missing actor is found murdered most foul. Someone, it seems, believes the pen is not as mighty as the sword. "Great Death Scenes from Shakespeare." is about to get real. Very real.

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
Something Rotten! features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to see this history-twisting tale on the NMHS stage.
