A three hour Martha Graham Technique Class & Creative Movement Study led by former Graham dancer Oliver Tobin.
Martha Graham Technique Class
This class introduces dancers to the foundational principles of the Martha Graham Technique, emphasizing core elements such as contraction and release, spiral, opposition, and the dynamic use of weight. Through floor work, standing exercises, and center combinations, participants will explore the expressive power and physicality of this iconic modern dance technique, building strength and artistry.
Creative Movement Study
This portion of the workshop explores creating movements and phrases inspired by gesture, incorporating key elements of the Graham Technique: contraction and release, opposition, shifts of weight, and fall and recovery.
Oliver Tobin is a former dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where he performed leading roles in Appalachian Spring, Clytemnestra, Diversion of Angels, El Penitente, and Embattled Garden, among others. His off-Broadway acting credits include The Kentucky Cycle, The Lesser Magoo, Nirvanov, and Tallahassee. As a Regisseur of the Graham repertoire, Oliver has restaged and directed works such as Celebration, Diversion of Angels, Episodes, Panorama, and Maple Leaf Rag. In 2019, he reimagined and choreographed Martha Graham’s American Document (1938), which premiered in Los Angeles. As the Director of Teens@Graham, he developed and taught technique and choreography programs for NYC performing arts schools, including Talent Unlimited High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Bronx Dance Academy, Urban Assembly School of the Arts, and the Martha Graham School. As a dancer and cultural ambassador with Battery Dance company, Oliver led modern dance choreography workshops throughout Germany and Africa. He relocated the physical collection to its permanent home at the NYPL Dance Division in January 2020. Additionally, he implemented a digital database to provide global access to Graham's legacy, facilitating licensing projects across theaters, film, television, galleries, museums, and educational institutions.
