This class will give students the fun of playing the piano, and with Musical Associates’ methods, a beginner learns how to play a tune in the very first lesson!

All genres of music will be included as part of the program so that students get a well-rounded artistic experience. The music club will pick up where school music programs leave off, a chance for students to get that extra attention and increased opportunity to perform.

Group lessons are offered for grades K–2 and grades 3–5, allowing students to learn alongside peers at a similar level.

Instrument rental for use during class is available. Rental fee is $20 for the 6 week session.

What does Thanksgiving mean to you, and how do you celebrate it? Is it a day to spend time with family and friends? Is it time to eat lots of delicious food? Is it a time to be thankful for the positive things in your life? As you can see, the same holiday can mean different things to different people. For Native Americans living today, answering the questions above is not so simple. Join an IAIS Educator for a discussion about the myths and misconceptions surrounding this holiday. From documents written at that time and from Wampanoag's oral histories, you will find the history of Thanksgiving is more surprising than you might think. Presented by the Institute for American Indian Studies.

An autobiographical one-woman show about a timid, imaginative, and resilient Jewish girl from Kiev, Ukraine, who immigrated to the US and who has always wanted to be an artist – filled with original songs and poetry. “Leaving Kiev: Coming Full Circle” is about leaving home we always carry inside. The show addresses such issues as antisemitism, immigration, first heartbreak, and emotional/physical abuse.

__

Mila Levine is a Kiev-born performing artist, poet, singer, songwriter, actor, and playwright. Her deeply personal solo performances, Leaving Kiev and Leaving Kiev, Part 2, have been featured at numerous festivals across New York City. A condensed virtual version of her work, Behind Closed Doors, is available on her YouTube channel: @Milochka89.

Mila’s songwriting has received multiple honorable mentions in national competitions. Her album of original Russian songs, My Voyage Back—written during her teenage years and later partially translated into English—is currently available online under the name “Mila.”

She arrived in the United States at the age of 18 with no knowledge of English. Since then, she has earned two master’s degrees and numerous fitness certifications, allowing her to teach a wide range of fitness formats. She is the founder and artistic director of Stage Love Theater, Inc., a nonprofit theater company.

Mila has been writing poetry since the age of seven and composing songs since she was thirteen. Her creative journey continues through her expanding digital portfolio, which includes several music videos such as Hometown, a tribute to her native Kiev and the ongoing war in Ukraine. She is currently producing a new music video for her song Hurt, featuring artists from diverse backgrounds.

Professionally, Mila serves as Director of Activities at a senior living facility in Westchester and teaches fitness at New York Sports Club. She is also developing her creative skill set further through studies in digital storytelling and photography. In addition, she is performing as part of a dance ensemble in Romeo and Juliet at the JCC of Mid-Westchester.

Her latest theatrical production, Leaving Kiev: Coming Full Circle, weaves together elements from her previous autobiographical performances and features several of her original songs in both Russian and English. Spanning decades—from her childhood in Ukraine to her life in the United States—this powerful piece has earned acclaim from audiences and critics alike following performances throughout New York City and Westchester. Mila is thrilled to bring her work to Connecticut and share it with the JCC of Sherman audience.

November Sound Meditation Theme: "Harvest of the Heart: Gratitude and Gathering

As autumn deepens and the natural world prepares for rest, this meditation invites participants to pause and reflect on the emotional and spiritual harvests of the year. Through sound, imagery, and guided introspection, they’ll gather moments of growth, connection, and transformation—offering gratitude for what has nourished them and gently releasing what no longer serves. This is a time to honor the fullness of the heart and prepare the soul for winter’s quiet wisdom.

NMHS Theatre is proud to present our 2025 Fall Production:

The Play That Goes Wrong

From Mischief Theatre–the masters of comedy in the West End, on Broadway, and currently Off-Broadway–comes this smash hit farce!

Welcome to opening night of the Cornley Drama Society’s newest production, The Murder at Haversham Manor, a dramatic murder-mystery where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. This attempt at a serious 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show—an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences! Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, this Olivier Award–winning comedy is a global phenomenon that’s guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter! This show is fun for the whole family!

Come see our fantastic cast and stage crew perform in this hilarious show!

NMHS Theatre is proud to present our 2025 Fall Production:

The Play That Goes Wrong

From Mischief Theatre–the masters of comedy in the West End, on Broadway, and currently Off-Broadway–comes this smash hit farce!

Please join us on Saturday November 15th at 7pm : John Denver Musical Tribute Concert featuring Nancy Walsh, Al Burgasser, Rob Brereton, Charlie Stokes, Mike Latini, and Dave Wonsey

Nancy Walsh grew up on the east end of Long Island near the water. She began playing guitar and singing in church at the age of 13. It was the music of John Denver that inspired her to branch out from Christian worship songs. Nancy now resides in Sherman, CT and performs the music of John Denver, Nanci Griffith, Kate Wolf, and other folk singers. She has also written songs about family and the New England coast. Nancy performs frequently at the JCC open mic and is also part of a duo with Caroline Bennett called Girls From Away. They play local venues including the JCC, Limoncello, and White Silo Winery. Nancy was also involved in co-hosting the Sherman Song Swap for many years.

Al Burgasser, a resident of Sherman, CT has a long history as a respected singer/songwriter as well as performing in a wide variety of venues in the western Connecticut area.

Al has also been very active in promoting public events including hosting Open Mic nights at the JCC in Sherman, co-hosting the Sherman Song Swap (also at the JCC), teaching songwriting and music lessons in local adult education venues, providing performances and lessons to Sherman Seniors (you should hear them play their Boomwackers!), and promoting and/or participating in many fundraising benefits and community activities over the years.

Rob Brereton, is an accomplished musician with a degree in music theory and composition. He is also Director of the Merryall Center for the Arts in New Milford, CT. Rob is internationally recognized for his skill on the mountain dulcimer and also sings and plays guitar. In addition, he composes, arranges and directs several choirs in western CT and is a music teacher in New Haven, CT.

Charlie Stokes  got his first guitar when he was 14. A year later he was in his first folk-singing group. In college he recorded a record and toured across the country with ‘The Folk Sound’ performing his first John Denver Songs, ‘Jet Plane’ and ‘For Baby, For Bobbie.’ A life-long John Denver fan, Charlie now sings with Pat Walker in their group, Cover to Cover.

Mike Latini developed his musical style in New York City and Boston, performing in rock bands and singer song-writer venues throughout the Northeast for years. His immediately accessible music, engaging performance style, and unique lyrical perspective help him ride the rails from the sublime to the ridiculous, and make all the stops in between. Mike has recently been playing in clubs and on concert stages in the New York, New Jersey, New England area, with occasional forays into the heartland. His five studio albums are available on most internet platforms, and a sixth -"In The Aftermath"- is currently in production.

Dave Wonsey Drummer/Percussionist Dave Wonsey, recently retired Music Educator, taught adjunct for the past 28 years at Marymount College, Fordham University, Norwalk College, Wooster School, & Kent School. Again for 28 years, he also held the positions of Principal timpanist & percussionist with Ridgefield. He is a World Champion Bagpipe band style Snare Drummer, and accomplished Jazz & Rock drum set player.

Join us for a Sunday Speaker Series with Professor and Author Joseph Luzzi on his latest release, The Innocents of Florence: The Renaissance Discovery of Childhood.

About the Book

How a Florentine orphanage rescued thousands of children and revolutionized childhood education amid the splendor of Renaissance art.

The story begins with the abandonment of the newborn Agata Smeralda on February 5, 1445, in Florence’s Hospital of the Innocents, the first—but certainly not the last—child to be left at its doors. In an era when children were frequently abandoned, often trafficked or left to die on the streets, an orphanage devoted to their care and protection was a striking innovation. The Innocenti, as it has come to be called—the first orphanage in Europe devoted exclusively to unwanted children—would go on to care for nearly 400,000 young lives over the next five centuries.

Built by the Silk Weavers Guild at a time when the wealthy were expected to contribute to civic life, the Innocenti featured glorious arches designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and housed works by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, from the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio to the sculptor Luca della Robbia. Meanwhile, the new orphanage also redefined the idea of “childhood” itself, particularly in education, as boys were often taught not just Latin and basic numeracy, but also a well-rounded curriculum that included art, literature, and music. Girls learned viable trades such as weaving and silk manufacturing, and the Innocenti assisted them in securing suitable marriages to protect them from poverty or a life of prostitution. Over the centuries, the orphanage oversaw groundbreaking scientific discoveries—it was a birthplace of modern pediatrics—while struggling against rampant disease, constant financial crises, and the dramatic ups and downs of Florentine politics in the Medici era

Reflecting in a touching preface on the major caregivers in his own life, Joseph Luzzi narrates the fascinating history of this revolutionary orphanage, offering readers the first comprehensive “biography” of a groundbreaking humanitarian institution that recognized poor and abandoned children as worthy of nurture—and thereby shaped education and childcare for generations to come.

About The Author

Joseph Luzzi is the Asher B. Edelman Professor of Literature at Bard College and an award-winning scholar of Italian culture. His book Botticelli’s Secret was named a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and was shortlisted for the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award. He lives in New York's Hudson Valley. https://josephluzzi.com

What People Are Saying

“Joseph Luzzi’s compact study of a single orphanage in Florence is a marvelous—and sobering—history of how we think about so-called abandoned children and childhood itself. He helps us understand family structure in Italy, certainly, but he also offers insights into artistic patronage during the Renaissance, Italian unification in the nineteenth century, and post–World War II notions of human and children’s rights. A remarkable achievement. “

- John T. McGreevy, author of Catholicism: A Global History from the French Revolution to Pope Francis

__

“This is an extraordinary book: deeply researched, beautifully written, and morally urgent. With clarity and compassion, Joseph Luzzi brings to life the heartbreaking realities faced by Florence’s abandoned children, offering profound insights into Renaissance attitudes toward childhood, honor, and social worth. A work of both scholarship and conscience, it challenges us to reckon with the past—and reminds us why the lives of children have always mattered.”

- Ross King, author of The Bookseller of Florence: The Story of the Manuscripts That Illuminated the Renaissance

__

“As revolutionary in its mission as it is in its architecture, the Hospital of the Innocents took on one of Florence’s most intractable social problems: an appalling number of abandoned babies, providing the hope of a dignified life to these blameless children of poverty, slavery, and misfortune. Joseph Luzzi’s harrowing, heartfelt book gives these Innocents something else: their own history.”

- Ingrid Rowland, coauthor of The Collector of Lives: Giorgio Vasari and the Invention of Art

Allow Dawn to help you explore a new yoga class or deepen your existing yoga practice. Dawn fosters a non competitive, friendly environment where all students are encouraged to grow and learn. Her main goal in teaching is to leave you calmer and more centered mentally and physically with skills to take off the mat into the real world.

Extra Gentle Yoga Wednesdays 11:30-12:30

Dawn will then lead you through a gentle, slow flow yoga planned carefully to help the body and mind release tension. Modifications are offered during all classes so that new students as well as seasoned yogis can benefit from this nurturing practice.

The goal of this class is that you feel relaxed, rejuvenated and centered when you leave class. Additionally these skills can often help you to manage situational stress/anxiety/tension as it occurs once you step off your mat and head back into the real world.

Class requirements:

Students must be able to get up and down off the floor with ease. Please bring your own yoga mat, yoga blocks and yoga strap. Additionally, dress in comfortable clothing you can move in and you may wish to bring a water bottle.
